The Weare Shrug / Ruana Crochet Pattern

Through the winter I rarely wear a coat and prefer ruanas when I go out in the winter. I find them less restrictive in the car. So, I was wondering if I could make one for summer, for those days on the lake when the wind is just a little chilly, when I didn’t want a sweatshirt or longer sleeves, but just a little cover up.

Enter the Weare Ruana, named after a town in New Hampshire, is made in a cotton blend medium yarn using a larger hook, started to work up quickly, and very much like I had originally envisioned it.

However, once I completed the piece, I thought what if I seamed up the sides, just a little, and made it more of a shrug? Well, that worked out too…so you get two patterns for the price of one!

Let’s get into some of the details of the shrug.

Sizing:

This is a one-size fits most, just like the wool ruanas you can buy in stores during the winter. If you are on the smaller size it will add to the flow and roominess of the ruana/shrug. It will also fit if you are on the plus size side without feeling restrictive.

The Yarn!

I used Caron Cotton Angel Cake yarn, and this only took ONE cake! Who doesn't love a one skein project. Unfortunately, this yarn has been discontinued, boo, hiss! Although you may still be able to find it on Amazon, Wal-Mart, or eBay.

Other yarns that would be great in this project are Caron Cotton Cakes, Loops & Threads Crème Cotton, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, and Lily’s Sugar n’ Cream. The pattern used 530 yards, so depending on the yarn you pick, it may no longer be a one ball project.

Amounts needed for the suggested substitutions:

  • Caron Cotton Cakes – 1 ball, this is the same yardage as the Caron Cotton Angel Cakes

  • Loops & Threads Crème Cotton – 2 balls, 324 yards each

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton – 3 balls, 186 yards each

  • Lily’s Sugar n’ Cream – 5 balls, 120 yard each

You will also need:

An L sized hook, (I told you it was a larger hook), and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and sewing up the side if you want the shrug.
