I love the look of crocheted baskets and wanted to make some for the holidays to give as presents. But I had some very specific criteria that they need to follow:
1. They had to be made with either acrylic or cotton yarn because I am allergic to wool & other animal fibers.
2. They had to stand up on their own, with no assistance from a stiffening agent or plastic canvas.
3. They had to be beautiful and classic.
This was a big order. And it took quite a bit of trial and error. But I finally hit upon the Pierce Nesting Baskets.

The Yarn!
Based on the criteria above, I went shopping and found Big Twist Tweed at my local Joann Fabric. It is a medium weight category 4 acrylic yarn that feels lovely.
By holding the yarn triple, yes you read that right, triple, it creates a very tight weave, and the baskets stand up beautifully by themselves. If you do not like acrylic yarns, that is of course ok, use your favorite medium weight fiber in a color to compliment your décor.
Three skeins of Big Twist Tweed will be more than enough to create all three baskets. If you don't have a Joann's near you, Red Heart Super Saver or Caron One Pound would also work for these baskets.
You will also need:
A size J hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. And a stitch marker for marking the beginning of each round.
These baskets because of the tight stitches and the stiff fabric can be hard on the hands. I was able to make all three baskets in one day, but my hands did ache afterwards. Take breaks, I know it is hard because once you get these started, you want to see them completed.
Finally, to finish off the baskets add a cute tag right under the handle for a polished professional looking basket.
Post your finished baskets!
